The majority of surfers are on this side of the lake, but the sun is setting behind them so they are back lit and their face is usually looking away from the shore. Next time I’ll try going to the other side of the lake. AF modes to try are Face Detect, Tracking, 225 Area and Continuous. I found the camera was under exposing by 1/3-2/3 of a stop, but even when the face was almost black, I could pull it back with a +80 Shadows and a -50 Highlights.
Next time I’ll go to the other side of the lake. A 100-400mm was fine. I suppose a circular polarizer is another option to experiment with.
These jpegs don’t look as sharp when I was working on them in Photoshop. Not sure what the issue is. Maybe I’ll same them at higher resolution than 75 dpi? or as a larger size?
