TennisBalls

  1. Q: How long do they keep their bounce? A: 1-3 weeks, depends on which brand and model ball, how often you play, how long you play, how hard you hit the ball, and how tolerant you are to the correct bounce. The felt will also wear out changing the weight and feel of the ball. Remember to save the old tennis balls in a 5 gal bucket to use to practice serves.
  2. Q: What happens if tennis balls get wet? A: The felt gets matted and the feel of the ball will change even after it is dried out, so try to avoid getting them wet. In general, if the court is wet you do not want to play on it since you can slip and injure yourself. If the balls get wet, they get heavier and bounce differently so please don’t play in the rain or when the court is wet especially if there are puddles.
  3. Q: Are all tennis balls the same? A: Definitely not. The Penn tennis balls at Costco should be avoided. They often don’t bounce high enough right out of the can and the felt feels thinner and wears out quicker than other brands. They are the cheapest tennis balls available for a reason.
  4. Q: What tennis balls do you recommend? A: I buy Dunlop Grand Prix Extra Duty Tennis Balls exclusively after trying several brands due to felt quality, bounce out of the can, bounce retention, and durability. I usually buy them by the case, but unless you plan to play that much it’s better not to since they can lose their pressurization after storing them for a year or more.
